Grant donors needed for development projects in Africa

We need information about possible sources of funds in the form of project grants or even donations. Our Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) Team is working to support certain Sisters' communities in their development projects, especially in Africa and elsewhere, in favour of poor and vulnerable persons. Projects may involve community development, the extension of social welfare services, clinics and hospitals, water wells, etc. Do you know of foundations, agencies, companies or persons in Malta or elsewhere in the world that may be able to provide project grants? Projects would be under the responsibility of the Superior of a community of Sisters in the place where the project would be executed. We will of course arrange for professional project proposals to be formulated before funds are requested, and arrange for authorised and transparent operations and international supervision through the Sisters of Charity Malta Province and where necessary through the congregation's world headquarters. We are also helping the Order of St Augustine in Malta with similar work.

Foundation Volunteers in 2010

In total, 75 volunteers provided a service during 2010. The highest number (48%) were Tutors working within the Learning Support Service – the Homework Support Service, Bridge Programme Basic Skills Tutors, Summer Creative Self-Expression Course and Mentoring. During the year, 25 volunteers discontinued their involvement; 12 of these were young Learning Support Tutors who discontinued for two main reasons: pressure of full-time studies (8) and conclusion of their summer voluntary experience (4).

OUR ETHOS

• Professionals and volunteers, working together;
• We offer services at community level, as close as possible to the families we serve;
• Our services are family-focused; we serve the most vulnerable and poor;
• We identify depressed neighbourhoods and k nock on doors to introduce ourselves and to explain about our work;
• We listen so as to identify needs;
• We try to respond to identified needs swiftly and in a creative manner;
• Multidisciplinary teamwork and volunteer involvement are key cornerstones;
• Duplication of services is avoided;
• Advocacy is an important part of our work;
• We reflect on patterns and systemic problems;
• We maintain qualitative and quantitative information for accountability purposes;
• Services cut across sectors – social care, education, mental health ;
• Group-work opportunities for all ages is created (children, youths, adults, grandparents, elderly);
• We work very closely with other providers at local & national levels;
• When we work locally, we get to know the community well and prepare a Community Profile;
• We make use of the community radio;
• We really love the families we work with;
• Involvement of service users in volunteering is another cornerstone;
• We work well with other service providers and are pro-active in contacting them to learn more and to collaborate;
• We read and reflect upon national policies;
• We continually reflect about our work;
• All workers have a mentor/ supervisor;
• Workers, in turn, mentor a service user (e.g. a youth at risk);
• Spirituality is key to our life & practice;
• We don't give up on service users .

WHY DOES SJAF FOCUS ON THE MOST VULNERABE FAMILIES?

Because they:

•  have no voice
•  are often outside radar of mainstream services/ or tenuous link
•  are enmeshed in web of factors
•  lack means or sliding into poverty
•  are less resourceful to meet their acute needs
•  are socially excluded

(UP) Hello to our: Workers -- Experts -- Associates -- SistersSJA -- Sostenituri, Donors -- SJAWC Donors -- Staff

The St Jeanne Antide Foundation (also known as the Ċentru Antida, Tarxien) was founded and endowed by the Provincial Council (Malta) of the Sisters of Charity of St Jeanne Antide Thouret. It replaces the St Jeanne Antide Welfare Campaign (SJAWC) as its restructured successor. Sr Laura of the SJAWC is Honorary Member of the Governing Board of SJAF. The SJAF consists of teams of lay persons and Sisters working together, under a lay CEO, mostly on a voluntary basis, for social welfare and participatory social development, with particular attention to social exclusion, and approaches involving self-empowerment. It collaborates with existing agencies. The Foundation is also interested in understanding the identity and needs of categories of vulnerable or socially excluded persons that are unserved or underserved by existing services. Please let us know what you know about such categories (confidentially, if you wish), so that we can eventually share such knowledge with the public, NGOs and state bodies and where possible try to mobilise existing or new bodies, resources and action. -- © 2010 SJAF Contact Us
