What is the Foundation?

The St Jeanne Antide Foundation (based at Ċentru Antida) and its predecessor Sr Laura Tanti's "SJA Welfare Campaign." The St Jeanne Antide Foundation (SJAF) is a non-governmental voluntary organisation set up by the Malta Province of the Sisters of Charity of St Jeanne Antide Thouret in collaboration with lay persons. SJAF is a registered NGO with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. It is run by a Chief Executive under the policy authority of a Governing Board. Its establishment was the result of a total restructuring of the "St Jeanne Antide Welfare Campaign" that had been set up and run by Sr Laura Tanti soc since the late sixties.

Sr Laura Tanti was one of the first Maltese to become a qualified Social Worker. Since, at the time, the University of Malta did not offer undergraduate degree courses in Social Work, the Malta Provice of the Sisters of Charity of St Jeanne Antide covered the costs involved in training a number of its sisters in the UK. Sr Laura obtained her CQSW there. Sr Laura is known for her tireless work with individuals and families in difficulty and for her fundraising in aid of social development projects in developing countries run by CAFOD. She also created Trust Funds in aid of the work of the MSSP, the Social Assistance Secretariat (SAS) and the Dar tal-Providenza. The St Jeanne Antide Welfare Campaign was officially registered as a Charity on the 24th September, 1974. For an overview of the work of the SJA Welfare Campaign, one can refer to the book: A Dream that Came True 1969 - 2000.

Why the Foundation

Our Mission Statement says: The Foundation shall be run and its mission fulfilled by a community of Sisters and lay people working in partnership systematically in teams for the support and self-empowerment of socially excluded persons, families and minority groups. As a Christian community, it aims to reflect the love of God in all that is done. The full mission statement and the Aims of the Fondation appear in the left column on this page.

There are still many vulnerable people whose needs are not being met by our society and its various services. There are even categories of such people for whom no service seems to have been designed at all. The Foundation tries to serve, or understand and raise awareness on, such persons and categories. Among other things, we help people get in touch with relevant existing services, and collaborate with other agencies on complex cases and on new developments.

Unserved, underserved, excluded, vulnerable, or needy people

It is the aim of the Foundation to be on the alert to identify persons and families at risk. In doing so, it will continue to be creative in developing responses that enable persons and families it supports to become empowered to deal with their challenging life circumstances. However, more widely, the Foundation wishes to identify categories of persons that are not served, or not fully served, by existing services. Eventually it will share such knowledge with the public, NGOs and state bodies and where possible try to mobilise existing or new bodies, resources and action. This process is seen as a move towards an inclusive and just society.

Volunteers and other workers

The Foundation currently has a team of around 35 volunteers. Their roles vary from Reception work at the Antide Centre to newsletter preparation to running bank and other errands, accompanying the Social Worker on outreach work, visiting lonely persons, assisting children in their homework and studies, visiting prisoners, and providing learning support to unaccompanied minors with a humanitarian protection status. Volunteers are both lay persons and Sisters of Charity who retired from their professional roles in hospitals, schools and social welfare services.

Where, where?

Ċentru Antida, the headquarters of the Foundation is at Tarxien – 51 Tarxien Road – adjacent to the Immaculate Conception Girls Secondary School of the Sisters of Charity.

Ċentru Antida - The Antide Reception Centre

The Centre is intended to be a homey space where persons who feel lonely and in need of support can drop by for a cup of tea, someone who is ready to listen and the services of a Social Worker. Courses for Carers and other interest groups are offered at the Centre. A roster of volunteers is being developed backed up by training. Additionally, it offers space for support groups to holdtheir regular meetings. One such Support Group is the Autism Focus Group of the National Society Parents Persons with a Disability. The Centre has two large rooms for courses and meetings; a kitchen that is used to train vulnerable persons to prepare simple, low cost but nutritious meals; offices; and a library for service users and staff. The Library is being built up through donations of books and resource materials, and is managed by two ETC trainees under the Youth Action Scheme and the Job Employment Scheme.

Community Work

Funded by the National Commission for the Family, the Community Work project is based in a locality in the south eastern region of Malta island. Formed in later January 2008, the community work team is made up of two part-time Community Outreach Workers and a Team Leader. In partnership with the Local Council, the Parish and the local state Primary School, the team is slowly making inroads in relationship building with families living in a number of housing blocks in three zones. A number of needs have been identified during house-to-house calls and discussions that ensue. A Mother and Baby Club has been started for young mothers with children below the age of three. Other group-based activities are being planned.

Youths with special developmental needs

Through its efforts to identify categories of persons looking for support services that best meet their individual needs, SJAF was referred a number of young persons with low basic skills who needed a breakthrough to be able to move on in life. Bridge was born in late January 2008 in response to the expressed needs of the referred youths. It is a basic skills programme that provides core modules in house while seeking further job related training opportunities. Bridge is partly-funded by a grant from the Ministry for Social Policy. Funds are being sought for the second intake.
